CCS Intake & Surrender Inquiries

Cat Care Society receives numerous requests from owners every day looking to rehome their cats. Unfortunately, as a small, limited-admission shelter, we aren’t able to help every cat in need. If you are unable to keep your cat with you, you have a few options!

  • Self-Rehoming: We understand that sometimes, as painful as it may be, keeping your cat is simply not an option. If this is the case, we encourage you to try to rehome your cat yourself with the help of Rehome on Adopt a Pet (use our referral code to waive the listing fee: RCXHAQTL2U8AD8Z).
  • Resources: Please visit our Resources page if you need help finding financial aid for medical bills, addressing problem behavior, securing pet-friendly housing or finding pet food or financial assistance for medical treatment.
  • Short-Term Boarding or Temporary Care: If you need a temporary caregiver for your cat for a short time while you deal with unexpected circumstances, you may be able to use our Temporary Care Program or similar programs from our partner shelters. Fill out the intake form to get on the list for our own program.
  • Strays: If you found a stray cat and aren’t sure what to do, check out our blog post to determine the best way to help an outdoor cat in need.
  • Surrender to Us: If none of the above options are suitable for your current situation, and you wish to surrender your cat(s) to us, please note that we do have a waitlist. If you can continue caring for your cat until we have space (approximately between 1-3 weeks), please fill out our intake form to get on the list and begin the process.
  • Surrender to Another Shelter: If you need help sooner than we can accommodate, there are many wonderful shelters in the Denver metro and across Colorado that support cats of all shapes and sizes. We recommend checking out our shelter partners, as some may have shorter wait times. If you submit the intake form and later find alternate arrangements, please contact us so we can remove you from our waiting list.
  • Returns: If you adopted your cat from us and wish to return them, please know that we will always take our cats back! Reach out to us with the cat’s shelter name and your request, and we’ll let you know how to proceed.

Owner Surrender Process

To begin surrendering your pet to CCS, please fill out our intake form. Please fully disclose your pet’s situation and traits so we can prepare appropriately. Once the form is received, a shelter representative will contact you within 7-10 days to confirm receipt and discuss next steps. We realize this is often a stressful time, and we ask for your patience as we handle as many intakes as we can. Once we have accepted your pet, we will schedule a time for you to drop them off with us. We do ask for a $40 surrender fee if you are able. Any additional donations are never expected but always appreciated. Please also provide your pet’s medical records, or let us know who to request them from.

If you choose to rehome your cat with us, you can rest assured knowing that they will receive loving care, food, shelter and medical attention or behavioral modification until we find a new adoptive family for them.
