Ready to Adopt?
Whether you’ve already picked out the cat you’re interested in or need some help finding the right one, we’re happy to help.
Many of the cats in our care live in the shelter and would love to meet you! No appointment is needed to visit the shelter during open hours (Thursdays-Mondays 12-6 PM). The best way to speed up the adoption process is to fill out an adoption application prior to your visit.
If you’d like to inquire about a cat currently in a foster home, please reach out to set up an appointment at info@catcaresociety.org.

The Adoption Process

Step 1
Apply to Adopt
If you have spotted a cat you are interested in, or think you may be interested in adopting in the near future, please fill out our adoption application! This brief one-page form that will go over your basic information.
If you’re not able to fill out an application prior to arrival, come meet some feline friends anyway! An application is not required to visit the shelter, but it does speed up the paperwork once you're ready to adopt!

Step 2
Meet Our Cats

Step 3
Adoption Chat
After your application is approved, one of our professional adoption counselors will chat with you to make sure that the cat you’ve chosen will be a great fit for your lifestyle. We may ask about your household and previous pets to better understand what kind of cat could be a great match.
An approved application does NOT claim a specific animal. Adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in putting a short hold on a specific cat, you may do so in person at the shelter for a fee.

Step 4
Final Steps
After reviewing your new feline friend's history, you can proceed with the final adoption paperwork and take your new cat home!
All adopters must show ID at the time of adoption. If your ID does not match the address on your application, you will also be asked to provide proof of current address.
A staff consult may be required for cats with certain medical or behavioral needs to talk through their ongoing care in more detail.
Note: All cats must leave in a pet safe carrier or cat back pack. Leashes and harnesses are not accepted.
All Cat Care Society cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. Your take-home adoption bag includes a sample of their current food and medications, as well as info on the Connect for Care program, providing a free medical exam with a participating veterinarian.
Adoption FAQs
While you’re at Cat Care Society, we ask you to follow these shelter rules:
- Please do not enter any staff-only areas unless you have a staff escort.
- Please close all doors behind you when entering the rooms.
- Use hand sanitizer frequently and between all rooms to prevent the spread of disease between cats.
- Do not let cats follow you into another room.
- Limit rooms to 3-4 visitors at a time. Please be mindful of others who may be waiting to visit a room.
- All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times in all rooms.
- No running or loud behavior.
- Follow staff direction at all times.
- Do not pick up any cats without approval from an employee, as it can cause unnecessary stress.
- Be mindful of cats with bandanas. These cats may be sensitive to touch and become overstimulated quickly.
- Give cats plenty of space and avoid overcrowding them.
- Cats with pink collars are not available for adoption as they are part of our Temporary Care Program.
- Visitors are welcome to sit on the floor when interacting with a cat. Please be mindful of keeping pathways open and do not lie down.
- Let the cats come to you.
- By entering you acknowledge the inherent risk of interacting with cats. If a cat is not engaging positively with you or seems bothered, stop the interaction immediately. Pay attention to their body language and respect their boundaries.
All of our cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations appropriate for their age. They are also given a thorough medical exam before they are available for adoption. Cats adopted from CCS are protected through Connect for Care Colorado. This service covers an initial exam from select veterinarians and up to $250 of veterinary care for shelter-related illness such as upper respiratory infections within two weeks of adoption. A list of participating providers and services allowed will be provided at the time of adoption. Please clarify program terms with the veterinarian you select. As with all living things, the health of a cat may change unexpectedly, and underlying health issues may go undetected. All cats should visit a veterinarian at least once a year for routine vaccines and exams.
You may! Because submitting an adoption application does NOT claim a specific animal, and adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis, we cannot guarantee that the cat you see online and are interested in will still be available when you are ready.
If you are interested in putting a short hold on a specific cat, you may do so in person at the shelter. Holds last until close of business the following day the shelter is open. There is a non-refundable fee of $15 for adults or $25 for kittens under 5 months to place a hold. Holds are not accepted online or over the phone, and adopters must have an approved application. Let us know if you have any questions!
Yes, we support out of state adoptions. We suggest checking in with your local veterinarian prior to adoption to see if they require any additional documentation. Any required documentation is the responsibility of the adopter.
Not to worry! We will send you home with a new adopter bag, which will contain a sample of the food your cat has been eating. You’re also welcome to shop at our on-site store, Meow Mart, to pick up toys, treats, bowls, beds, litter boxes, and any other goodies your feline friend may need.
We receive numerous requests from owners each day looking to rehome their cats. Unfortunately, as a small, limited-admission shelter, we aren’t able to help every cat in need and have a waiting list to accept new cats. Visit our Intake and Surrender web page for more information, details on rehoming on your own, and other area shelters that may be able to help sooner than we can. (For found strays, please contact your nearest municipal shelter for the best chances of the cat finding its way home.)
