Cat Care Society has released its calendar-year 2023 data, achieving the most number of adoptions yet to date and placing 1,098 cats into loving homes. The number of intakes also increased in 2023, with the shelter accepting 1,244 cats into its care. In comparison, in 2022, Cat Care Society took in 860 cats and adopted out 750 of them. These numbers are also an increase from the shelter’s most recent fiscal year. 

Across the country and the Denver metro, many animal shelters faced an increase in animals in need and owner surrenders. According to Shelter Animals Count, a national database for sheltered animal statistics, the total number of cats entering shelters exceeded the number of cats leaving by 2% in 2023. Economic conditions, inflation, lack of skilled veterinary care and access and the veterinary shortage, all affected the tough year that many area shelters and rescues faced.
